OCT / Retinal Imaging

Argus Opticians 3D OCT – Advanced Retinal Imaging

At Argus Opticians we are continually striving to remain at the forefront of eye care not just in Donegal but in Ireland. We appreciate how important your vision is to you and we are dedicated to preserving the health of your eyes that is why over the past couple of years we have made a number of improvements to our business to pave the way for the introduction our latest service – Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).

What Is OCT?

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) is a revolutionary technology used for imaging the many different structures of the eye. Similar to an ultrasound, OCT uses light to image the multiple layers that make up your retina, the light sensitive area at the back of the eye. Previously it was only possible to see the surface of the retina.

What Is Involved?

OCT is an easy non-invasive and painless scan which takes just a few seconds to perform. It is suitable for patients of all ages and it is key for early detection of eye conditions. This is vital to allow better treatment options and a better visual outcome should anything be detected.

Who Performs And Analyses These Scans?

At Argus Opticians none of our examinations are trusted to ancillary staff and are all undertaken by our Optician. Lorcan spent six months studying in 2017 to enable him to better understand the mechanisms of OCT and to interpret the scans. Lorcan went on to achieve a distinction and was awarded with a Professional Certificate in Medical Retina. Since then Lorcan has analysed over 12000 OCT scans in practice.

Who Should Have OCT?

At Argus Opticians we would especially recommend OCT for any of the following:

  • Macular Degeneration
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetes
  • Naevus (Moles)
  • Flashing Lights and Floaters
  • Eye or head trauma
  • M.S.
  • Optic Nerve Disease
  • Headache
  • Sudden loss of vision
  • High Prescriptions
  • Anyone with a family history of eye disease
  • Specialised contact lens wearers
  • Dry eye sufferers
  • People considering laser eye surgery

OCT For Healthy Eyes

OCT is recommended even for those with normal healthy eyes. This allows baseline readings to be recorded which can be referred back to for comparison should anything unusual present itself in later years. This in all likelihood allows for early detection of eye disease and better treatment outcomes.
